Gi vs no-gi: which should a beginner try first?

The jacket, the rashguard, the pace difference, and how to choose without overthinking it.

Newbie questionDo I need to buy a gi before I know if I like this?
The practical difference

Gi uses the jacket and pants for grips. No-gi uses athletic clothing, body position, and underhooks instead of cloth grips.

  • Gi can feel slower because grips create friction.
  • No-gi can feel faster and more slippery.
  • Both teach useful control, escapes, and problem solving.
How to choose your first trial

Start with the class that has the better beginner slot and the easier schedule. Style preference matters less than getting a calm first month.

  • Borrow or rent a gi if the gym offers it.
  • Wear fitted shorts and a rashguard or athletic shirt for no-gi.
  • Ask whether the beginner program teaches both.
