What happens in your first jiu-jitsu class?

The mat, the warmup, the awkward parts, the live practice question, and what is normal on day one.

Newbie questionWill I get thrown into sparring immediately?
Most first classes follow a pattern

You check in, meet the coach, warm up, learn one or two positions, drill with a partner, and may watch or try controlled live practice.

  • You can say you are brand new. You should say it clearly.
  • You can ask to watch live rounds before joining them.
  • You should be shown how to tap before anyone pressures you.
The awkward parts are normal

You will not know where to stand, what grips are legal, or why everyone suddenly sits against the wall. Good rooms expect this.

  • Arrive 10 minutes early so staff can orient you.
  • Do not try to win every drill. Learn the shape first.
  • If something hurts in a sharp way, stop and ask.
